Ceva offers flea topical Vectra for Dogs & Puppies for long-lasting protection

Dinotefuran and Pyriproxyfen combination delivers safe and effective control of all stages of fleas on dogs

April 14, 2009, Fort Lee, N.J. – Ceva announces Vectra for Dogs & Puppies, a new monthly, topical, flea control product containing dinotefuran as the insecticide in combination with pyriproxyfen, an insect growth regulator (IGR). Vectra for Dogs & Puppies is the newest product in the Vectra® line and a complement to Vectra 3D®, Vectra® for Cats & Kittens and Vectra for Cats®. It can be used on dogs as young as eight weeks of age for year round flea treatment and prevention.

Vectra for Dogs & Puppies:

  • Kills adult fleas; starts killing fleas within 2 hours
  • Provides ongoing protection against fleas and the diseases they may transmit (tularemia, bartonella and rickettsia)
  • Protects dogs from flea infestations that may cause anemia, tapeworm disease and flea allergy dermatitis (FAD)
  • Contains an IGR – pyriproxyfen – stable in sunlight and prevents development of all immature flea stages (eggs, larvae and pupae) for 1 month
  • Can be used on puppies as young as 8 weeks of age
  • Patented applicator provides convenient topical treatment

Vectra for Dogs & Puppies efficacy data confirms that it has one of the quickest onsets of killing activity of any topical flea product, with month-long protection against all stages of fleas (eggs, larvae, pupae and adult fleas). “In a study conducted to evaluate the duration of adulticide activity against fleas for Vectra in dogs weighing 21-55 pounds, Vectra began killing fleas within 2 hours following a single application and continued to perform for 30 days maintaining a 100% reduction in fleas throughout the duration of the study,” explained Dr. Cathy Ball, Ceva veterinary services.

“Pet owners want fleas killed as quickly as possible to end their dogs’ suffering,” says Dr. Ball. “Oftentimes, the successive feeding activity of fleas on dogs elicits a hypersensitivity skin disorder known as flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). Treatment of dogs with Vectra for Dogs & Puppies kills fleas and may reduce further evidence of FAD.”

Pet owners and their dogs have a variety of lifestyles. Differing lifestyles, coupled with the differing parasites endemic to the area of the country, means their vector protection needs may be different. “Vectra for Dogs & Puppies is the perfect complement to Vectra 3D,” says Julia Stephanus, Vice President, Companion Animal Global Marketing. “The Vectra for Dogs and Puppies is recommended for dogs whose lifestyles, size, breed and geography dictate the need for outstanding flea protection. Vectra 3D, our first commercial veterinary product, has a broader spectrum for those dogs that are exposed to fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, lice, mites and sand flies.

Vectra for Dogs & Puppies™ proven ingredient combination provides lasting protection for dogs and puppies as young as 8 weeks of age. The dual-action formula includes Dinotefuran, a fast-acting, third generation neonicotinoid with a novel mode of action and Pyriproxyfen, an insect growth regulator (IGR) that controls and prevents the development at all immature flea stages including eggs, larvae, and pupae. Tested with up to five times the recommended dose, Vectra showed no significant adverse effects.

The unique, elongated, patented applicator tip makes Vectra for Dogs & Puppies™ easy to apply to a dog’s skin through the haircoat. The rounded tip minimizes risk of skin abrasions. The easy-to-open applicator eliminates splash back and spilling, and the contoured shape makes it easier to handle and apply. With the one-piece applicator, there is no need to use scissors to open or remove a cap, making application fast and efficient, and at the same time, minimizing the potential of a choking hazard.

Ceva’s Bloodhound® Technology - an innovative, proprietary track and trace system, ensures veterinary exclusivity and authenticity of the product. Each package of Vectra® can be traced from the point of manufacture to the veterinary purchase. Bloodhound Technology allows Ceva to maintain the integrity of its products through a secure distribution channel, as well as, guarding against counterfeits.

“We are able to enhance the role of veterinarians in the lives of the animals they treat. Through our Bloodhound Technology, we can help keep companion animal health in the hands of professionals,” states Stephanus.
